Learning to learn

During the past few weeks, I’ve been interviewing candidates for a couple of open positions we have at Burrp!. As this is an engineering position, I need to ask technical questions dealing with languages (the Java, C++ kind), data structures, design patterns etc.

Most of the candidates that I’ve talked to, only have superficial knowledge of the technology or the application they’ve worked on. None of them understand the beneath-the-hood stuff. It seems that they’ve lost their curosity to explore and go deep beneath the layers. Is it that they became complacent once they got jobs after college?

Listen guys, learning is a life long process and should never ever stop. Never let the curious kid inside you die. Dig deeper into anything thing that you do. It could be your job or your hobby. Find out how things work.

For any thing new, it takes time to learn how to learn, but once you discover how to do it don’t ever stop.
